We have chosen to represent the 6th Cavalry in our re-enactments because this unit had one of the most outstanding combat records to come out of the Second World War. The 6th Cavalry was part of Patton's 3rd Army Group. Listed here is a timeline of their accomplishments.
13 October 1943 6th Cavalry Regiment sailed from NYPD aboard HMB "Queen Elizabeth". Disembarked at anchorage in Firth of Clyde; closed in garrison in Northern Ireland 21 Oct. Headquarters at Tanderagee, County Armagh
1 to 30 November 1943 Training; Emphasis on Anglo-American indoctrination weapons familiarization; individual basic training. Assigned to First U.S. Army. Drew vehicular equipment.
1 to 31 December 1943 Training: Small unit; maintenance; driver training. Attached XV Corps. Closely associated with 165 Brigade of British 55th Infantry Division (Drake's Drum).
1 January 1944 6th Cav Regiment ceased to exist and became known as the 6th Cavalry Group. Reorganized into 6th Cavalry Group; 6th Cavalry Rcn Squadron; 28th Cavalry Squadron. 26th & 28th Cavalry Squadron were attached to 6th Cavalry Group. Assigned to XV Corps.
12 to 31 January 1944 Intensive basic & small unit training; refresher marksmanship; radio school. Crew development.
1 to 28 February 1944 Crew & platoon training period. Corps CPX's. Intensive comm training. Heavy range scheduled.
1 to 31 March 1944 Preparation for short sea voyage. Special combat training. Marksmanship and comm training
1 to 30 May 1944 Movement of 6th Cav Group from Ireland to England. HQ 6th Cav Group & 6th Cav Squadron stationed at Woodland Belt, Northleach; 28th Cav at Frampton Court, Gloucester.
9 July 1944 Sailed by echelons (LCV's, LCT's, LST's) from Weymouth. Crossed English Channel in convoy. Landed on Utah Beach (St. MereEglise) France.
1 August 1944 Third U.S. Army sprang to life. 6th Cavalry initiated operations of ALS. St Lo breakthrough to Coutances and Avranches.
18 September 1944 First combat action: Support troops attached to Task Force Polk. 3rd Cavalry Group in area Garche.
1 to 8 November 1944 Direction of ALS delegated to 6th Cavalry Squadron. CG Third Army directed organization of the "Mobile Force". 5th Ranger Bn joined. Co. B 293 Engr Bn joined.
1 to 5 December 1944 Combat action. Attached to 5th Infantry Div. Attack on Carling - L'hopital, Carlsbrunn. Entered Germany First 3rd Army unit in Germany; first to place CP in German; first to attack French territory from Germany.
8 to 24 December 1944 Aggressive defense in sector on west bank of Saar River, Volkingen to Forbach (Saarbrucken area). 15 December: Attached to III U.S. Corps. 19 December: Attached to XII Corps. 21 December: Attached  to 6th Armored Division. The German counter- offensive in the Ardennes opened 16 Dec.
24 December 1944 Marched through  Germany - France - Luxembourg - Belgium to join III Corps in Battle of the Bulge.
25 to 31 December 1944 Reconnaissance, screening and protection of Corps left flank in St. Hubert - Libremont area, west of Bastogne.
1 to 9 January 1945 Defense mission in conjunction with 35th Infantry Division; Harlange area.
9 to 13 January 1945 An epic of combined mounted - dismounted Cavalry action, resulting in capture of Harlange, Watrange, Tarchamps, Sonlez. Pinched out.
19 to 30 January 1945 Relieved 26th Inf Division. 21 January: captured Wiltz, Luxembourg. Cleared Corps zone to Our River and defended in sector. Rotation of Squadron for rest and training.
3 to 18 February 1945 Relieved 5th Inf Division. Occupied and defended sector on Our River facing Siegfried Line. 12 February: attacked and cleared Vlanden. 11 February: attached to VIII Corps.
18 to 24 February 1945 Operations against and breaching of the Siegfried Line.
24 Feb. to 4 March 1945 Pursuit. Crossing operations at the Prum River and the Nims. Very rough fighting.
9 to 12 March 1945 Pursuit and race to the Rhine. (vic Andrnach)
27 March 1945 The big job. Crossing of the Rhine and the drive to the east, in pursuit, ending at Giessen - Butzbach.
4 to 14 April 1945 VIII Corps reserve. Mopping up enemy stragglers in rear areas. Maintaining contact between Corps.
15 to 18 April 1945 Crossing of the Saale. Advanced in Corps Zone to seize Corps limiting line on April 17.
6 to 7 May 1945 The final attack. Captured Adrof & Mark Neukirchen. Pinched out. Defended sector against infiltration.
8 May 1945 Hostilities between the Allied Expeditionary Force - USSR and the German state ceased.
